NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Christopher Newport University is relaxing its demonstration policy after students were denied permission to protest a visit by Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan.

The policy required students to give 10 business days' notice before a demonstration on the Newport News campus.

Christopher Newport President Paul Trible says that the university will change the notice rule to 24 hours. Locations where students can protest will be expanded.

Ryan's visit last week wasn't announced until one business day in advance. Administrators refused to make an exception to the 10-day rule.

Trible says that was a mistake. He says an exception should have been granted.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia had urged the university to revise the policy.
