NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The Christopher Newport University Marching Captains are on their way to London to perform in the city's 2012 New Year's Day Parade.
The parade is in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II , which is a celebration marking the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne.
The parade also marks the beginning of London's Olympic year, a news release from CNU said.
Participation in the parade was by invitation only. Lord Mayor Duncan Sandys, of the City of Westminster, traveled to Newport News in March 2011 to extend the invitation to CNU President Paul Trible, the release said.
The marching band left for their trip to England on December 28.
The band currently has 140 members and is directed by Dr. Joseph Falvey and Professor Annie Stevens.
The parade will begin at 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. It will be streamed live at www.londonparade.co.uk and in retrospect on www.information.tv .
