NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Newport News Fire Chief Ken Jones is stepping down from the position to take on a new role in the city.
The Department made the announcement Friday that Jones will be leaving the office he's held for eight years, on June 30, to take over as the City's Coordinator of Emergency Management.
"I am looking forward to this new season in my career," Jones said in a news release. "I have enjoyed serving as Fire Chief and I am humbled to have had the opportunity to lead such a highly motivated and trained organization."
Newport News' City Manager has named Deputy Fire Chief Scott Liebold Acting Fire Chief. He'll take over the role on July 1. Liebold has been with the City of Newport News for almost 28 years, starting as a firefighter. He has served as Deputy Fire Chief since 2005.
