NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The Newport News Police Department is warning residents of a new phone scam.
According to police, residents have called with complaints about a telephone call they received telling them that their ATM card was compromised. Police tell WAVY.com the recorded message states the call is from one of several local banks and the person should press a given number for assistance in rectifying the problem.
Newport News police are urging anyone who gets this type of call, or who may have already and responded, to immediately notify their bank.
Police say this particular scam seems to be targeting the elderly, but could be targeting anyone of any age.
Local banks are aware of the scam and are working with authorities to find who is responsible.
