HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C. (WAVY) - Access to Hatteras Island via NC 12 reopens to four-wheel drive vehicles around 12 p.m. Saturday.

Officials tell WAVY.com that access is limited to Hatteras Island only and does not include the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge which was closed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service until the road opens to all traffic.

Access does not include All Wheel Drive vehicles. Vehicles without four-wheel drive will not be allowed past several turn around points established by the Dare county sheriff's office.

Northbound traffic from Hatteras will be turned around  just south of Mirlo Beach and southbound traffic from the beach will be stopped at the entrance to the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, according to a press release from the Dare County Sheriff's office.
