HAMPTON, Va. (AP) - The venerable Langley Research Center in Hampton is undergoing some changes.

NASA has awarded a $42 million contract for the construction of a cafeteria and conference center at Langley. Work should begin in the spring.

The Daily Press of Newport News reports that it's the second phase of NASA's $330 million plan to modernize Langley, which was founded in 1917 as aeronautics research laboratory. Langley came under NASA's umbrella in 1958, at the dawn of the space age.

A 2010 National Academy of Sciences report found the center has a backlog of $176 million in maintenance projects.

Meantime, the Daily Press also reports that NASA will mothball two wind tunnels at Langley by Oct. 1.
