HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - WAVY.com received dozens of phone calls and hundreds of Facebook posts from viewers asking about a loud boom across the region.
We received reports from people in cities including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and on the Eastern Shore.
We also received reports of shaking from viewers across the area sometime between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey's seismological reports, there was no seismic activity in the area on Tuesday night.
A spokeswoman at NAS Oceana said they got several reports on their noise complaint hotlines, some as far away as Suffolk.
However, she said a sonic boom from Oceana wouldn't be heard that far out in Suffolk.
As for a rocket, a NASA spokesperson at Wallops Island on the Eastern Shore said they didn't have any activity Tuesday night that would make a noise like that.
There was a similar boom in the sky in March of 2009. In that case, people reported seeing a bright light in the sky along with the boom, suggesting it was a possible meteorite. The noise was so loud, it woke some people out of bed.
10 On Your Side will continue to look into this, and we will keep you posted if we find out anything.
