VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A motorcycle operator died Sunday morning when he crashed his bike in the Blackwater section of Virginia Beach.

Just before 11 a.m. Sunday, Virginia Beach police responded to the 6200 block of Crags Causeway for a reported motorcycle accident.

Investigators learned Michael Richard Martin, 24, stationed aboard the USS Winston Churchill at Naval Station Norfolk, was driving a 2005 BMW R1000S motorcycle northbound on Crags Causeway.

Police said Martin lost control of his motorcycle and appears he failed to negotiate a curve. The motorcycle skidded over 100 feet off the roadway.

Martin sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said speed may be a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Department's Fatal Crash Team.
