PD: Mom shot son in back

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A 24-year-old man died after police say his mother shot him in the back in the Kiln Creek area Sunday night during a domestic incident.

Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department said officers responded to a call about a shooting in the 100 block of Lochview Drive at 8:18 p.m.

Officers arrived to find the victim, Te'Sean Jerrell Wilkerson, suffering from a gunshot wound to the back and medics took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Officers took 39-year-old Sonja Ltanya Adkinson, Wilkerson's mother, to police headquarters for questioning and later arrested her in connection to the shooting.

Some neighbors say Wilkerson had a brother who they say he abused. They say Adkinson may have been attempting to protect her other son Sunday night.

"I've seen him grab them a few times and try to, you know, scare 'em straight, in a sense," one neighbor said. "Somebody had called police before cause police have been over there before for, you know, incidents."

Police say they were called to the home twice in one night last week for domestic problems and once in September to take care of an intoxicated person.

Adkinson has been charged with murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
