NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - An elderly man was taken to the hospital with burn injuries Saturday afternoon after he accidentally caught himself on fire in a supermarket bathroom.

Fire crews were called to the Farm Fresh in the 700 block of W. 21st Street in Norfolk Saturday afternoon for reports of a man who was on fire, according to a Fire Department spokesman.

Chief Harry Worley told WAVY.com that an elderly man accidentally caught himself on fire in the bathroom at the Farm Fresh. He said bystanders were able to put the flames out with a fire extinguisher by the time crews arrived.

The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Fire Marshals are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.

The store has been closed because there was smoke inside the store.  Worley says the store needs to be inspected by the health department to ensure none of the food was contaminated.
