VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The reopening of the Lynnhaven Fishing Pier in Virginia Beach has been pushed back again. For the first time since 1956, the pier will not be open Memorial Day weekend.
The November Nor'easter in 2009 shattered part of the pier.
The pier was supposed to reopen before the first of the season. Now, the rescheduled reopening date of May 27 will also not happen.
According to a blog which updates the pier's progress, equipment problems, rain and some stolen tools caused the setback. The contractor has bridged half of the 120 foot gap. Another crew will be brought in to repair deck and railing damage on a separate section of the pier.
A new opening date has not been set.
The Nor'easter was just the latest blow. Six years ago, Hurricane Isabel removed several hundred feet from the end of the pier, which was rebuilt.
