NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Newport News Central Precinct Detectives have been investigating a series of residential burglaries which occurred on River Road, Ferguson Cove, Riverside Drive, Barclay Road and Hilton Terrace. In at least six of the eight cases, the suspect would enter the residence as the victims slept and remove property.
Detectives received a major break in the case when a Uniform Patrol Officer observed a car run a stop sign on Dresden Drive and Terrace Drive.
The officer stopped the car in the 700 block of Terrace Drive. A man and woman jumped out of the vehicle and ran into a nearby home.
The officer was able to detain the female, however the male avoided capture.
After further investigation it was discovered that the car had been stolen from Richmond and property that matched the description of the stolen property in one of the recent burglaries was located in the car. Officers and detectives were able to identify the male, who ran from the car.
The female was identified as Chae Scot Herring, 19 of the 700 block of Terrace Drive. Herring was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property, the car, and possession with the intent to distribute marijuana. She was taken into custody of the Newport News City Jail and was later released.
The male suspect who initially avoided capture, was identified as Sterling Antonio Lewis, 28, of the 700 block of Mosby Street in Richmond.
Lewis was apprehended on Wednesday, November 4th at approximately 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Mercury Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue.
Lewis was taken into custody by members of the Department's Fugitive Apprehension Unit and the U.S. Marshall's Service.
Lewis is facing charges including four counts of grand larceny, two counts each of embezzlement, burglary, attempted burglary and one count each of obtaining money under false pretenses, bad check and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. He was transferred to the Hampton Roads Regional Jail.
He is also wanted in Richmond.
As the investigation continues, additional charges are a possibility.
