WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - "My sister at the time of her death was a beautiful successful 27-year-old woman. She would have been a beautiful 50-year-old woman this past summer and she deserves better than this," said William Thomas, remembering his sister Cathy.
She and friend Becky Dowski were found dead inside their vehicle on October 12, 1986. Since then there have been theories, but no arrests.
"Someone posing as an authority figure, was the FBI's theory, approached the car and something transpired which led to the brutal murder of two young women," said Thomas.
Six others were murdered over the next two years along the Colonial Parkway in Williamsburg. More than two decades later, the cases went cold. Now the FBI is hoping a fresh approach will change that.
On Wednesday, FBI investigators told the Call family they were taking a bottom-up approach, going back to old leads and putting someone in charge of the case full time. The Calls' brother, Keith, and date Cassandra Hailey disappeared on Colonial Parkway in 1988.
"Now I feel like we have some help, honestly now I do," said Doug Call.
William Thomas is hoping for the same help. He plans to return to the Norfolk area to meet with the FBI as well.
"We'd like to know what steps are being taken to submit all of the evidence in all of these cases for the latest DNA testing, further we want confirmation that the FBI has interviewed all of the suspects in this case," said Thomas.
An FBI spokesperson told WAVY.com the case was never closed, but that investigators hope a fresh approach using new technology will produce results.
"Members of the Virginia law enforcement community have expressed to us that they were concerned that these tests should have been done years ago by the FBI," said Thomas.
