VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Most surfers WAVY.com spoke with are thrilled Tropical Storm Danny is churning up some waves, but we found a few "smaller" surfers whose parents told them the waves were just too big for them on Friday.

At first glance, it's hard to believe a tropical storm is churning off the coast, but if you look closer at the Atlantic, you'll see a surfer's dream courtesy of a storm named Danny.

"It's been good. We've been getting a little bit of pulse from the storm that's off the coast," says Christian Binford.

Binford is an avid surfer from Virginia Beach and because of the East Coast Surfing Championships this weekend, he says Tropical Storm Danny has perfect timing.

"We don't get surf around here very much and these tropical depressions and stuff generate waves for us and it's a lot of fun," he said.

Bailey Ennis lives near the beach and when she comes to the Oceanfront there are two things she loves to do: surfing and swimming.

On Friday, dad told his budding surfer the waves just weren't for her.

"I'm at 9th Street, I know there's a rip current. I wouldn't let my kids surf in it," says John Ennis.

Bailey says the current is too strong for her and the signs of that could be seen for miles down the beach in the form of red flags. Because of those rip currents, beachgoers could only go ankle or knee deep in the ocean -- unless of course they know their way around a surf board.

Emergency workers tell WAVY.com the red flags will more than likely be up until Sunday. It all depends on when the storm passes and the water calms.

In the meantime, if you come to the beach, they ask that you keep a fully charged cell phone with you at all times in case of emergency. They also say it's very important to pay attention to the street you are on while on the beach, that way if there's an emergency, you know the location you need to tell 911 crews to look for.

Emergency workers also say it's very important for you to play close attention to forecasts of Tropical Storm Danny and of course, you can do that right here on WAVY.com.
