VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Beach Police say 27-year-old David Ray Smith had an appetite for crime. He's wanted on four counts of robbery and four counts of using a firearm at sandwich shops, pizza places and convenience stores across Virginia Beach. Police say more charges are pending.
Police released a DMV photo of Smith, but say his hair is
shorter now, and he may be heavier.
WAVY.com spotted police in the 900 block of Delaware Avenue,
where Smith lived, and a moving van at his townhouse.
Janelle Martin said she had no idea the neighbor she talked
to a week and a half ago was suspected in up to 14 robberies across
3 cities over two weeks.
"I think it's absolutely insane. I mean it's crazy I saw him
on the news I think earlier today and was like, 'okay that's my
neighbor,'” said Martin.
Police believe Smith is the same man seen in surveillance
video at a Zero’s, Subway, and Tropical Smoothie.
Virginia Beach police say credible information received in
the last couple of days helped them to identify the suspect as
Smith.
WAVY.com checked with other cities. Norfolk police say they
believe Smith could be connected to three or possibly four
robberies while Chesapeake Police say they are investigating
whether or not Smith could be linked to two.
Martin said she's seen plenty of police activity as
investigators search for Smith on Delaware Avenue.
"It's been pretty crazy. It's not normally like this; it's a
quiet neighborhood," said Martin.
Police say Smith is possibly driving a 1984 Red Chevy S-10
Pickup. They also say he's known to frequent Chesapeake, Portsmouth
and Virginia Beach.
Warrants have been issued against Smith for Robbery and Use of a
Firearm.
