The recession is over, according to the White House, and at Norfolk's J.C. Penney store in the Gallery at Military Circle, they're looking for people to fill seasonal jobs.
Store manager Donna Standish told WAVY.com, "J.C. Penney as a whole hires 10 to 20 percent up for the holiday season. At this store, a little bit higher. About 25 percent more than we normally staff."
That's great news for part time college student Trey Betros, who's looking for a job. "I was working at Starbucks for about 2 years. I left there to work for another company. Things just didn't work out and I've been looking for about 3 months now," he said.
But some don't believe the recession is totally over. At Fat Philly's in Chesapeake, owner Minwer Abdelhay insists "there's a lot of improvement to do. Business is kind of slow. A lot of people are out of jobs and a lot of people come into my business looking for jobs. That tells me the recession is still here."
During a briefing at Tidewater Community College on the impact of Virginia's colleges and universities on the economy, Mark Hubbard, a presenter said, "I think the economy may be turning better. But for Virginians, if we really want to come out of the economic slump we've been in, we have to invest in higher education. And we need to invest in young people so they can get the higher paying, higher skilled jobs."
