Students back to school after VB crash

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Students returned to Green Run High School Monday, the first day of class since three classmates died in a car crash Friday afternoon.

Killed were driver Matthew Kirkbride, 18, of the 3700 block of Forrester Lane, passengers Joseph Jenkins, 17, of the 4600 block of Stonebridge Lane, and Adam Ross Sherman, 17, of the 900 block of Ridgeway Court. All were seniors who attended the Technical and Career Center in the afternoon.

The three had left school and were driving west in the 2700 block of Salem Road when Kirkbridge lost control on the wet road because he was driving too fast, Virginia Beach police said.

Kirkbridge's 1999 Volkswagen car rotated on the wet road and struck the side of an oncoming 2002 Chevrolet full-size van.

Impromptu memorials to the three have appeared both at the crash site and at the high school. Grief counselors are on hand to talk with students, school officials told wavy.com.

Adam Sherman: The family will receive guests from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. The funeral is at 1 p.m. Tuesday at at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Colonial Grove Cemetery in Virginia Beach.

Matthew Kirkbride: The family will receive guests at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. The funeral will follow at the funeral home at 3 p.m.

Joseph Jenkins: There will be a viewing from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. The funeral is at noon Wednesday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
