NORFOLK, VA - How much money does Michael Vick have, and how much does he owe? Those are the questions at the center of his bankruptcy case in Norfolk Federal Court.
A lawyer representing the IRS was in court Tuesday, claiming Vick owes Uncle Sam $1.2 million in back taxes.
The other big question, when will Vick get out of Prison? And can he help connect the financial dots before he gets out.
In Federal Bankruptcy Court, Michael Vick's attorneys asked that his disclosure statement listing assets and liabilities be delayed until he gets out of jail, and offered January as a time for that to happen.
"I just want to do everything I can to get this plan confirmed and get his release from prison," says Michael Blumenthal from New York City, one of Vick's attorneys.
Blumenthal told the Judge Vick could be released January 20, and said he's optimistic the release to a halfway house will happen by January 31.
Outside court, Blumenthal would not elaborate as to how he knows that, "Exactly what I said on the transcript... I don't have any further comment."
In court, Judge Frank Santoro denied Blumenthal's request to continue the case until Vick gets out of prison and said, "Mr. Blumenthal, Mr Vick came voluntarily into this court...I am not driving the case by what may or may not happen, and what may or may not be convenient for Mr. Vick."
Those owed money by Vick say the disclosure statement is incomplete and depends on the questionable assumption he resumes a pro-football career.
Vick's other attorney Paul Campsen of Kaufman and Canoles told the Judge the firm has $125,000 of Vick's money. There is a disagreement whether that money is part of Vick's pension, protected in bankruptcy or whether it's regular Vick assets not protected, but could be used by the firm to pay legal bills.
Many court dates were set Tuesday. The next one is Friday for approval to sell a Vick automobile he gave a friend. And a determination whether that $125,000 I reported on can be taken by Kaufman and Canoles to pay legal bills.
