NORFOLK, Va. - A time capsule discovered during the demolition of Norfolk's Kirn Memorial Library was opened Thursday morning at the new Norfolk Main Library.
Norfolk Councilman Randy Wright presented the findings.
The square metal box contained a number of items, including the operating budget for the City of Norfolk from 1962. Councilman Wright said the budget in 1962 was $46 million, "now it's more than a billion", he said.
The capsule also contained a letter from the Mayor at the time the capsule was sealed, addressed to future generations.
Some other items included a book titled "Norfolk Historic Southern Port", several city code books, newspaper clippings and pictures.
The capsule was sealed in a concrete vault on May 18, 1962 and buried on the library's grounds at the corner of City Hall Ave and Bank Street in Norfolk, HRT told WAVY.com.
The library is being demolished to make way for a light rail system.
