NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk police tell WAVY.com a suspect fired at officers Monday evening in the 500 block of Ashlawn Drive.

Police spokesperson Karen Parker-Chesson says the shooting happened at 7:39 p.m. after officers went looking for a suspected robber. When the officers approached the suspect, Parker-Chesson says the suspect fired at them and missed.

Within minutes, flashing lights filled the 500 block of East Little Creek Road, where Parker-Chesson said the suspect ran.

People in the neighborhood could hear what was happening. Resident, Sheila Davis, told WAVY.com, "Basically, I heard four or five gun shots."

She said, "As I was walking down the street, I saw four or five officers pulling up, off the side streets, and they blocked it all off where nobody could get in or out - off of Ashlawn."

Ashlawn Drive is parallel to, and one block behind, East Little Creek. Police said the robbery and shooting suspect ran back to Ashlawn and officers picked him up there.

Investigators combed through an area between two buildings looking for any clues that may have been left behind.

Parker-Chesson said the suspect is in custody, but police are withholding his identity while they continue their investigation. She said he's a person of interest in an ongoing investigation.
