Burst water pipe floods NSU dorm

NORFOLK, Va. - On the first floor of Scott Hall, Anthony Metheney is used to hearing songs in his sleep. This time, the music major heard water.

"We heard this dripping sound coming from the roof," said Metheney.

At 4:00 a.m. in the morning, Metheney's hall, called Scott Hall, flooded after a water pipe burst on the second floor. Ankle deep water filled the first and second floors. The school evacuated twenty-two rooms with about fifty students in all.

Norfolk State University police are investigating the pipe breaking as vandalism.

"We just tried to grab the valuables and the most important stuff and get out of there as soon as possible," Metheney remembered.

Now students have to cope with damaged computers, ruined clothing, and soaked electronics.

The school offers two options for students: use your parent's homeowner's insurance or go through the university's insurance. Administrators just ask students wait for the full damage assessment before filing claims.

The university bused dozens of students to a nearby Holiday Inn, where they'll stay until their rooms are dry and clean. Shuttles

will take students to and from campus, and the university promises security so students can be ready for midterms.

Back on campus, cleanup crews worked through the day to dry the dorm. Soaked carpets sat outside to dry in the afternoon sun, slowly getting the dorm ready for students to move back in.

School administrators say students will stay at the hotel for about a week.
