NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - City Line Apartments in Newport News was evacuated due to heavy flooding in the area Thursday afternoon. More than 50 residents were forced from their homes after water started seeping in.
Residents called for help as they noticed the flood waters increasing. Initially firefighters searched 200 apartments according to Battalion Chief J.D. Carper. Firefighters transported residents to a nearby bus waiting to then transport them to a community shelter off of Wickam Avenue.
Cassandra Russell chose to stay with relatives until the water recedes. She lived on the second floor of the building, but when the water started coming in downstairs she decided to leave for safety's sake.
"You gotta do what you gotta do," she said.
Another resident, Thomasine Rainey has lived in the complex for
five years, she says she's seen her share of flooding. She told
WAVY.com she's been evacuated three times before and says this time
it's much worse than any other time.
