HAMPTON ROADS, VA - Virginia food stamp recipients will see a change to the program come October 1.

The program's name is changing to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The change will not effect the program's benefits and those receiving food stamps will not need to reapply, however, your benefit amount will automatically change in October.

Your benefit may increase or decrease, depending on certain circumstances.

Changes to SNAP include:

  • Higher income limits
  • A change in the standard deduction that is allowed for every household
  • New amounts for meal allowance for daycare providers
  • Different amounts for daycare deductions and the telephone and utility standards

For questions or more information, contact your local department of social services.
