CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Chesapeake police arrested a homicide suspect Tuesday morning just 8 hours after the responding to the crime scene. "Our dispatch did receive a call, possibly more, about gunshots in the area," Officer Dorienne Boykin told WAVY.com, about the scene in the 1400 block of Oliver Avenue Monday night.
Dominique Lavon Collins, 18, of Chesapeake is charged with murder and using a firearm during the commission of a felony in the shooting death of Michael Henry Callender, Jr., 22, of Chesapeake.
Police were called to Oliver Avenue at around 9:30 p.m. Monday, Once on scene, officers found Callender suffering from a gunshot wound. Callender died at the scene, Boykin said in an email Tuesday.
Forensic detectives were back on the scene Tuesday morning searching for additional evidence in the case. A pair of detectives could be seen using small pink poles and pink yarn to trace bullet paths where Callender was found.
Not far from the scene, detectives also collected at least two bullet shell casings left on the ground.
Boykin said detectives were still trying to dtermine a motive in the case. It's a question WAVY.com wanted to ask Collins himself, but he declined a request for an on-camera interview.
Collins is being held at the Chesapeake City Jail. His first court appearance could be as early as Wednesday morning in Chesapeake General District Court.
