CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Attorneys in the Mormon missionary murder trial are preparing
for opening statements in the high profile case.
21-year-old James Boughton of Deep Creek is accused of
shooting and killing a 21-year-old missionary from Utah and
wounding his partner.
Both the judge and attorneys on both sides have spent three
days interviewing citizens to be seated on the jury. During
the long, tedious process the family of the accused killer has been
sitting right behind the families of the two missionaries.
James Boughton is charged with the First Degree Murder of one
man, the Malicious Wounding of another man, and the Attempted
Malicious Wounding of a third man.
Prosecutors say they will prove Boughton is the gunman who
attacked all three men.
It happened in Deep Creek January 2, 2006. A
21-year-old Mormon missionary named Morgan Young from Utah was
walking through a neighborhood, trying to spread the teachings of
his religion with his fellow missionary Joshua Heidbrink of
Colorado, who was 19 years old at the time.
It's possible they unwittingly became witnesses to a crime in
progress.
Police say as the missionaries were walking nearby, a man who
lives in the neighborhood was shot at. Then, the gunman
turned on the two missionairies and shot them, killing one of them
and injuring the other.
The wounded missionary, Joshua Heidbrink has been
sitting in the courtroom with his parents and will likely be called
to the witness stand to testify about what happened.
James Boughton has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The prosecutor and the defense attorney are expected to
deliver their opening statements Monday.
