Future of Johnstown Road?

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The future of a dangerous Chesapeake Road is now in the hands of the City Manager.

City Public Works is recommending changes to Johnstown Road following a fatal accident and resident complaints. In August, Charles McCarty, Jr. was riding his bike along the side of Johnstown road when Sarah Perry hit him. Perry was charged with DUI.

Following a study of the road, public works is now recommending the speed be reduced from 45 mph to 40 mph and that street lights be replaced and additional ones installed. The city also plans to apply for a federal sidewalk grant.

McCarty's son, Chris Hendershott, told WAVY.com, "I hope it goes through and they do take down the speed limit. I think it'd be really cool to put just bike paths more in Chesapeake period."

The City Manager has to approve the recommendations before they go through. Sarah Perry is scheduled to be in court December 7. Hendershott says he plans to attend.
