NORFOLK, Va. - These days you're likely to find people fishing at the Boathouse grounds in Norfolk, rather than attending concerts there. The city doesn't want people trespassing on the property.
The Boathouse closed after it took a hit during Hurricane Isabel. Time has also taken a toll. A city spokesman says the last estimate to repair the facility was at $500,000 -- money the cash-strapped city of Norfolk doesn't have right now.
Bob Batcher told WAVY.com, "[Hurricane] Isabel really severely damaged it to the point it was condemned and became unsafe and that's when the city took over...."
He says the site is on the city's list for potential development downtown.
Kathie Moore of Moore Music Group is a booking agent and arranged for many of the rock musicians to take the stage there, including its first act -- the Knighthawks.
"It was very happy. People were pleased to have a venue they could go and not have to sit in a seat." She says she liked it because it was rustic, and had wooden floors and columns. Moore says "most of the groups were on the louder side and invoked a lot of fun and dancing and people really had a good time there."
Her all time favorite at the Boathouse was Todd Rundgren. Moore says she misses it and knows of others who do too.
