A Day of Remembrance & Hope

Ninety days after the nation witnessed the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Hampton honored those who lost their lives with a Day of Remembrance and Hope. A dedicated group of people has marked the date every year since, on the anniversary of the attack.
9/11 Remembrance at JEB Little Creek-Fort Story

Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story
The Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story Chief Petty Officer Selectees will host a 9/11 remembrance ceremony starting at 8:30 a.m. at the base theatre on Sunday, Sept. 11.
The purpose of the ceremony is to remember the events of 9/11 and the lives that were lost during this tragic attack on our nation. This will be the fifth year JEBLCFS CPO selectee’s have conducted a 9/11 ceremony.
Firefighter and paramedic, Lt. Jeff Howdyshell, of Prince William County Fire and Rescue, will be the guest speaker for the event. Howdy is a member of the September 11th Liberty Memorial Committee and the World Trade Center Steel Memorial Committee. The ceremony will also include remarks from the Commanding Officer, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Capt. Charles Stuppard, a solemn moment of silence and a Flag passing ceremony.
Healing and Remembrance Ceremony

Town Point Park, Norfolk
To mark the 10th anniversary and offer residents a time for reflection, the City of Norfolk is hosting an all-day Healing and Remembrance Ceremony. Join us as we honor those who died, the heroes who responded and the military who continues the fight to this day.
Four moments of silence will be interlaced with the names of the nearly 3,000 people who died that day. Norfolk residents affected by the tragedy have volunteered their voices for the readings which will also include the names of the sailors who perished on the USS Cole.
Local choirs and the Tidewater Pipes and Drums will fill the park with music throughout the ceremony and members of the public will receive a flower to place at the circle of flags following the ceremony.

5K at Old Dominion University

The run, in conjuction with Blue Star Families, will begin after a moment of silence to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the first plan striking the World Trade Center.
Norfolk Police and Fire Museum Exhibit

Norfolk Fire and Police Museum, 401 East Freemason St., Norfolk
On Sunday, September 11, 2011, you are invited to the Norfolk Fire and Police Museum, 401 East Freemason Street, from Noon-4pm to view and touch artifacts featured in the 9-11 Commemorative Exhibit.
The event will also feature Norfolk Police and Fire personnel with first hand accounts of their work experiences at the site of the World Trade Center, in the aftermath of 9-11.
Let Freedom Ring! 9/11 Ten Years Later

24th Street Park - Virginia Beach Oceanfront
A tribute to heroism, a greater future, and a celebration of American resilience and commitment to freedom. Hosted by Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr. The program will feature comments by U.S. Representative Scott Rigell. The Tidewater Winds and the Virginia Beach Chorale will provide musical reflection.
Hampton Bay Days Special Tribute

Hampton City Hall
The 9/11 tribute will take place at 2 p.m. at the City Hall Stage and feature a small speech by 2011 Hampton Bay Days Commodore, and current Fort Monroe Garrison Commander, Col. Anthony D. Reyes; an honor guard march; and the singing of the National Anthem by Bay Days performer Rachel Farley. The ceremony is expected to last 15 minutes.
1st Annual Virginia Freedom Festival

The 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance was created to inspire millions of people to annually pay tribute on the anniversary of 9/11 by pledging to perform good deeds, support charitable causes, volunteer and engage in acts of compassion.
