YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A 10 foot pet Burmese Python is believed to have escaped from its home in York County.

Animal Control Officers are canvassing the Blackwell Trailer Court area of Grafton looking for the snake. That's off Oriana Road.

According to Captain Paul Long, pythons are typically afraid of people and will generally avoid them, but officials are still cautioning residents not to approach the snake if they see it. Instead, immediately call Animal Control at 757-890-3621.

Animal Control did not say when the snake was last seen.

As of July 12, the python was still missing according to Paul Long with York County Department of Fire and Life Safety. Long says the search for the python has intensified.
