Lane closures scheduled in Norfolk

May make commute challenging

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Light rail construction will shut down the Park Avenue/Water Street intersection as early as Monday, according to city officials.

Add another closure set for Tuesday at St. Paul's Boulevard and it might be quite a challenge navigating you're way through downtown Norfolk.

"It puts a damper on getting places on time," said one downtown driver. "They've shut down everything," griped another.

The city plans to close one lane northbound on Saint Paul's Boulevard beginning Tuesday, February 9 and continuing through late February for sewer relocation work.

During the work, Saint Paul's Boulevard will be reduced to one lane northbound and two lanes southbound for one block between E. Main Street and City Hall Avenue.

According to a news release from the city, the sewer relocation project is in its initial phase of a multi-phase project that is being scheduled to coordinate with light rail construction on City Hall Avenue in an effort to minimize the duration of traffic impact to motorists.

During the first phase of work, the traffic pattern will be as follows: One block on Saint Paul's Boulevard will be reduced to one lane northbound and two lanes southbound between E. Main Street and City Hall Avenue.

As an alternate, motorists are encouraged to use Waterside Drive and Brambleton Avenue.

The city plans to clearly mark all traffic patterns and pedestrian access areas.

HRT's new president Phil Shucet told WAVY.com all major projects downtown should be done by summer.
