CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Family and friends gathered at a funeral home chapel in Chesapeake Thursday to say goodbye to Joey Fonseca, the 16-year-old Kempsville High School student who lost his life Sunday morning in a suspected DUI accident.
Hundreds of people packed the funeral home, including the school's baseball team, of which he was the pitcher. A eulogy was delivered during the service and balloons were released as a tribute in a cemetery in Virginia Beach.
"Joey was a special young man," said Loretta McCarty, a family friend of the Fonsecas. "and a wonderful ball player."
"Our grandson played ball with him and you can see his teammates coming by here and paying their respects to Joey. He's going to be missed by all of his friends."
A fundraiser in Joey's memory is set for Saturday at Q-Master Billiards, off Princess Anne Road in Virginia Beach from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
