RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) - Sewage spills are to blame for contamination causing officials to close down a portion of James River Monday.
According to Matthew LiPani with the Virginia Department of Health, the river is closed to shellfish harvesting of oysters and clams, but not crabs or fin fish.
LiPani says heavy rain in Newport News over the weekend is to blame for flooding and sewage bypasses in some portions of the river, making shellfish taken from the affected areas unacceptable for consumption.
