James River Bridge work rescheduled

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - VDOT has rescheduled repairs on the James River Bridge southbound not to overlap with work on the Hampton Roads-Bridge Tunnel eastbound.

All southbound lanes of Route 17 James River Bridge will be closed the following days for grid deck repairs:

  • Friday, Sept. 28 beginning at 9 p.m. until Monday, Oct. 1 at 5 a.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 5 beginning at 9 p.m. until Monday, Oct. 8 at 5 a.m.

VDOT emphasized that upon completion of work on the southbound lanes, crews will close the northbound lanes but will not allow the closures of the JRB to overlap with those of the HRBT eastbound.

This comes following a traffic snafu Sept. 15 that left hundreds of drivers at a standstill in traffic while the HRBT and JRB were closed at the same time.
