TANGIER ISLAND, Va. (WAVY) - After a year of fundraising, Tangier Island dedicated its new health clinic Sunday during a bittersweet ceremony. The clinic's leading Advocate, Doctor David Nichols was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
For more than 30 years Doctor Nichols has traveled to the remote island every week to treat patients.
Hundreds of people were on hand for the dedication and on Sunday, Doctor Nichols' dream came true when they opened the nearly $2 million clinic.
Dr. David Nichols|Tangier Island Health Clinic"I have been truly blessed by my patients and friends on Tangier and have so much for which to be thankful. Remember on Tangier you are a little closer to heaven. My love to you all and god bless," Dr. Nichols said at Sunday's ceremony. Nichols also received the Country Doctor of the Decade Honor.
