YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia State Police are investigating a multi-vehicle accident where a toddler, who was not secure in a safety seat, was ejected from a vehicle.
The three vehicle accident happened on Route 134, also known as Hampton Highway, at Yorktown Road in York County.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya, with the Virginia State Police, said a 2011 Chevy Malibu, traveling southbound on Route 134, ran a red light to make a left turn onto Yorktown Road. The Malibu hit a Chevrolet Sienna and a 2-year-old child inside the Malibu was ejected. Anaya said the Malibu then struck a pickup truck that was stopped at a stop sign on Yorktown Road.
A 7-year-old, seated in the Malibu, was also injured in the accident. Both children were transported to Riverside hospital with serious injuries.
Anaya said the driver of the Malibu, 35-year-old Michael Sawyer, was charged with running a red light, reckless driving and failure to secure a child in a child restraint.
Sawyer is the father of both children.
