High tide flooding expected Thursday

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Hampton Roads residents should brace for high tide flooding in the coming days.

The National Weather Service issued a Coastal Warning for the Hampton Roads region until 7 a.m. Friday. Water levels were already beyond their forecasted high during high tide Wednesday afternoon.  Elizabeth River Crossings stayed on alert in case the Midtown Tunnel needed to be closed Thursday, however, Thursday morning the tunnel remained open.

According to Sewells Point tides, which are a good indicator for all of Hampton Roads, the minor flood threshold is 4.5 feet. Tides will be above that Thursday, Friday and Saturday during times of high tide.

Sewells Point, as well as some areas of the Eastern Shore, could see moderate flooding with water levels exceeding 6 feet early Thursday morning.

If you live in an area that floods easily, move your vehicle to higher ground and be alert.  The Larchmont neighborhood in Norfolk is a typical flood zone.  WAVY.com crews reported Thursday morning that residents had moved their cars.  The water was high in the morning, but neighbors said it wasn't as bad as Wednesday night.

Strong northwest winds will continue between 15 and 25 mph throughout the day Thursday.
