Health experts learn about bed bugs

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Local health experts went through a training session Wednesday to learn how to eradicate bed bugs, a growing problem in Hampton Roads.

Exterminators met with 60 members of the Peninsula Health Department to discuss properly identify and stop bed bugs.

"Particularly in nursing homes and senior facilities, you have a senior who is often times bed-ridden and they don't have perfect blood supply," Cory Newell with Visiting Angels said. "They're not going to kill the person, but they're going to make their life very uncomfortable."

Exterminators say 3 out of every 10 calls in Hampton Roads are for bed bugs.

The parasites feed only on the blood of their hosts and like to bury themselves in warm areas like beds and can easily spread.

To keep bed bugs away, vacuum your home often and wash your bed sheets in warm water at least once a week.
