HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - News of a grocery store robbery spread quickly down Mercury Boulevard in Hampton Friday morning.
Police say two suspects, dressed as FBI agents, robbed the Newmarket Square Food Lion. The men strapped fake bombs onto employees and shot a beer vendor in the leg. Police are still searching for the suspects.
"I'm glad I wasn't at Food Lion when that happened," Jeannette Moore, who walked to the store to buy groceries, said.
The parking lot was full of bystanders and customers Friday morning. Many customers found out the store was closed only after seeing the crime tape around it.
People living in the surrounding neighborhoods heard sirens all morning and wondered what was causing the commotion.
"We were setting up and getting stuff ready and they were just flying from every direction," explained Misty Ceraul, who saw police cars race by her garage sale.
The owner of the home told WAVY.com she's holding the garage sale, because her family is planning to move as a result of all the crime in the neighborhood.
