HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - A 69-year-old man that was shot and killed by police after he opened fire on officers while they served a drug warrant has been identified.

Police say that William A. Cooper, of Hampton, fired a handgun at Hampton police officers while they were serving a drug warrant Saturday morning. The two officers fired back, striking Cooper who was taken to Riverside Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Hampton Police Chief Charles R. Jordan released the following statement to WAVY.com Saturday afternoon:

"The officers serving the warrant on Clifton St. on Saturday, June 18th, were met by an armed subject who fired at them. They returned fire striking the subject. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The investigation, thus far, supports the action of the officers. They were met with deadly force and had no alternatives other than to return fire. I feel confident that their actions were justified. The officers responded in accordance with their training and within the guidelines of policy."
