Strangers help Hampton boy at Christmas

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - A group of total strangers helped the boy who lost his leg in a train accident have a very merry Christmas.

In October, 10-year-old Jahmee Harris was hit on Bellwood Road, off Warwick Boulevard in Newport News.  He lost his left leg below the kneecap.

WAVY.com talked with Jahmee's family when he was at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters. His mother Moishy James told WAVY.com she was worried about money for Christmas gifts and had to cut back on her work hours to take care of Jahmee, who requires round-the-clock attention.

As soon as 10 On Your Side's story aired many calls and emails came in from people wanting to help. The Great Neck Baptist Church youth group took the lead, raising money and buying presents. 

"Our youth group saw a story that you ran about a little boy who lost his leg in October, so we called you," said Tracey Evans.

The group even bought a tree for the Jahmee's family.  They delivered bags full of gifts to his Hampton home Christmas day.

"We're trying to give him a Christmas he will remember," said Sharon Rose.

Jahmee, known as Juju to his family and his sister were so surprised. Juju's apartment was crowded with strangers who consider themselves his extended family.

"It was great to see that," added helper Morgan Grenier.  "We made a difference and we helped somebody out on Christmas."

If they didn't hear how thankful Juju was, they could certainly see it in his face.  The smile glowed from ear to ear.

"It's unexplainable," James said.  "It just makes me real happy."

In case these Christmas angels will tell you it was better to give and than to receive.

"It's better than any Christmas we ever had," Evans added.  "To see these children light up and to know what the holiday spirit is about, it's just been the best experience."

"I was happy to see him happy," Rose said.
