HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - President Barack Obama was presented with a seedling of the Emancipation Oak , during Hampton University's 2010 graduation. The President delivered the commencement at the May 9 ceremony.

The seed, from the historic live oak on the campus of Hampton University, was grown and nurtured by McDonald Garden Center.

President Obama indicated that he plans to plant the seedling on the grounds of the White House.

According to Hampton University's website, the Emancipation Oak was the site of the first Southern reading of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, an act which accelerated the demand for African-American education.

The sprawling tree is designated as one of the 10 Great Trees of the World by the National Geographic Society and is part of the National Historic Landmarks.
