Hampton Cup Regatta speeds into Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - The Hampton Cup Regatta , the oldest continuously running hydroplane boat race in the country, will return to Mill Creek in Hampton this weekend.

More than 75 hydroplane boats and Jersey Speed Skiffs from the United States and Canada are expected to compete, a news release about the race said.

The regatta was first held in 1926 and is the largest sporting event in Hampton, drawing racers from as far away as New Zealand.

The fun will kick off at 5 p.m. Friday, August 5 with the Bash at the Bridge. The event is free and open to the public, and will feature live music by Slapwater. The bridge will open to the public at 4 p.m., with Slapwater playing sets from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, August 6 and Sunday, August 7, racing starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. in Mill Creek, located at the entrance of Fort Monroe from the East Mercury Boulevard bridge in Hampton.
