Ft. Monroe to remove inspection station

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - If you're planning on traveling to Fort Monroe between Monday, August 13 and August 21, there's a road closure for you to be aware of.

VDOT will oversee the removal of an inspection station at Fort Monroe over the next week.  Beacon Development, located in Virginia Beach, is the company that will take the project on.  While crews are removing the structure, McNair Road will be closed.

Drivers and pedestrians can use Ingalls Road to access certain attractions, such as the Chamberlin, Continental Park, Engineer's Fishing Pier, Outlook Beach, the Fort Monroe Marina, and the Fort Monroe Leasing Office.  Work will be done to remove the inspection station canopy between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. until August 21.

The Ft. Monroe Authority says the canopy will be removed to improve the scenic view of the former military base.  President Obama designated Ft. Monroe as a national monument in November 2011.  Hampton's Mayor, Molly Ward, told WAVY.com in November that it could be a few years before the monument is operational.
