Fort Monroe apartments demolished

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Demolition began Monday on a series of damaged apartment buildings at Fort Monroe.
The Fort Monroe Authority will be removing 31 apartment brick and mortar buildings that were used as personnel housing units in the early 1950s. Hurricane Irene exposed structural damage and weakening to the buildings that would have cost far more to repair than to tear down.
The project is expected to cost approximately $675,000, and FMA has applied for FEMA public assistance funds to help offset the costs.
