HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - The City of Hampton has declared a local emergency for areas affected by the June 1 tornado, however officials do not believe federal or state aid will be sought.

Secretary of Public Safety Marla Decker and state coordinator of emergency management will tour Hampton Monday to assess the damages from Friday's storm.

Crews are still cleaning debris. Almost 100 truckloads of debris were removed over the weekend.

The city recommends that permit fees for people repairing tornado damage be waived, and that decision will be up for a vote by Hampton City Council at its next meeting.

People interested in helping those affected by the tornado can make financial contributions to local charities and faith-based organizations responding to the situation or to the Virginia Disaster Relief Fund . People in affected areas can also call emergency management at 727-1208.
