Habitat for Humanity Women Build

Groundbreaking ceremony held Monday

HAMPTON, Va. - WVBT FOX 43 is again partnering with Habitat for Humanity on their fifth Women Build to help construct a Habitat home. And though the build is called "Women Build," it's not at all about excluding men, but including more women in construction activities.

This year, WAVY TV 10/WVBT FOX 43 News Anchors Nicole Livas and Eric Harryman will gather up their hammers and power tools and get to work helping build a new home for this year's Habitat Home recipient Pearlean Brooks.

Homeowner-to-be Pearlean Brooks will be sharing the home with her daughter Mariah and Mariah's newborn son, Armond. Pearlean has worked for the past five years at Aramark Dining Services at William and Mary College.

Habitat doesn't just give away homes. Brooks has maintained good credit and has put in more than 200 hours of her own "sweat equity" into building the home. Once the home is built, she'll then purchase it from Habitat and pay a monthly no-interest mortgage for the next 30 years.

"I am so excited and proud to provide a home for my daughter and grandson," said Pearlean Brooks. "We will finally have a home we can call our own."

"Pearlean's personality and work ethic exemplifies the need for more affordable housing in our area," said Habitat Board President-elect Alexis Swann. "Pearlean has worked steadily to provide for her family. Yet, despite her best efforts and excellent credit, she is unable to afford a house of her own. Habitat is happy to work with her to make her dream of homeownership a reality for her family."

Other Building Partners include BB&T, Eaton Marina Power & Lighting, Habitat ReStore, Home Paramount Pest Control, Junior League of Hampton Roads, Langley Federal Credit Union, Lowe's, St Kateri, Starbucks, Towne Bank, Visions 2000, Wachovia and York River Electric.
