NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Gun control advocates plan to have their say at a demonstration by a gun-rights group at Old Dominion University.
The pro-gun Virginia Citizens Defense League is planning a rally at the Norfolk campus on Tuesday to oppose rules limiting where people can lawfully carry weapons at state-supported universities.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that the Virginia Center for Public Safety plans a counterdemonstration in support of an ODU proposal to ban concealed weapon permit holders from bringing guns into school facilities. The gun-control group's president, Andrew Goddard, says decisions about campus safety should be made by administrators, faculty and students.
The Virginia Citizens Defense League argues that the decision to carry a weapon should be left to the person who legally possesses it. The organization is planning several campus demonstrations.
