VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A nationally recognized program, called First Tee , teed it up at two local golf courses on Monday to raise money to impact the lives of young people.

Supporters of the program raised money at the Cavalier and Princess Anne Country Clubs.

"First Tee was founded on being able to develop character skills to help them to become better citizens in our communities, to be better leaders, for when they grow up they have more self confidence and also to make sure that they can have the ability to to call a penalty on themselves," said Lee Sumers, from First Tee of Hampton Roads.

First Tee uses golf as a hook to get children to learn about life values that stay with them.

"Integrity, sportsmanship, confidence, perseverance, honesty, respect - just things like that, that will help you succeed," said James Olgletree, a First Tee participant.
