Girl kept in crib box for a year

Investigators say she couldn't walk

GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) - Two parents are accused of keeping a young child caged, naked, starving, and covered in her own waste. The details outlined in court documents are so graphic they are almost unbelievable, but the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office said the details are facts that paint a horrifying scene.

It actually began with an investigation into stolen gold bouillon - 37.5 grams in weight. Detectives wanted to search 8142 Carrie Lane, which is a single wide mobile home.

Detectives showed up at the Gore home and found much more than gold bouillon. They found Shannon Gore's 6 or 7-year-old daughter in a cage made out of the crib.

Detectives found the child nude laying in feces which was also in her hair. She was suffering from bed sores and severe starvation. She was so hungry, detectives saw the child eating the flaky skin from her forehead.

Shannon Gore said her child has down syndrome and cerebral palsy, and according to the court papers kept her in the cage to calm her.

The court papers stated the child got one Pop-Tart in the morning and one in the evening, sometimes with a sandwich.

It is unsure if Brian Gore is the natural father. He admitted to investigators he built the make shift top that turned the crib into a cage. Detectives said Brian Gore said the girl was in the cage since last summer and rarely came out. She would remain in the cage all day while Shannon worked.

Brian Gore went on to say, “No one knew she existed because she was born at home, and Shannon never went to a doctor.” The child has no birth certificate.

Detectives said when they found the girl she could not walk because she was kept in the crib-cage for so long.

During the Sheriff's Office interview with Brian Gore, investigators got information of a child buried in the backyard.

They dug up the remains and sent them to a medical examiner. Brian and Shannon are charged with felony child neglect, attempted capital murder, and first degree murder for the child's remains found in the backyard.

They refused an on camera interview, and are currently in jail. Their first court appearance is expected to be Wednesday morning.
