NORFOLK, Va. - While city officials work to recover from the 2010 Winter Storm, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Virginia Department of Emergency Management officials went door-to-door in Ocean View Tuesday, educating residents about the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Norfolk's Ocean View was hit hard during a powerful November nor'easter. Flood waters covered much of the area. Some folks lost everything because their home or renters insurance didn't cover the damage.
That's why federal and state teams are going straight to the residents to talk about the National Flood Insurance Program.
FEMA's Richard Waalkes told renters they can obtain policies to cover household goods. "It's relatively affordable, contents only, and it's available from your local insurance agent."
He said a preferred risk policy can run just under $300. Stanley Sinclair who admits he didn't have flood insurance before the November nor'easter lost a number of his belongings due to water damage. He says he wasn't expecting a flood.
"So this will be a big help to get started with some of the help that we need," Sinclair said.
